Travel and College Essays

Travel and College Essays July 17, 2012 Dont write about travel in your college essays. Dont even consider writing about it (photo credit: Andre Engels). Travel and college essays dont mix. Not even one bit. Did you just take a trip to Hawaii? Did you get to tour Pearl Harbor? Maybe take a helicopter over the big island? Maybe you got to go snorkeling or jet skiing. Or maybe you just took a trip to France. Perhaps you saw great art at the Louvre. Perhaps you got to see the Eiffel Tower. Maybe you ate a baguette. How very cool! But absolutely, positively not something to write about in your college essays! College admissions counselors dont want to read about your traveling exploits. They dont want to read about how you a seventeen year-old get to travel around the globe on mommy and daddys dime. They dont want to read about how you get to see these amazing sites, sites you probably dont even appreciate simply on account of your youth. They dont want to read about how you get to go to all of these fancy places, how you get to eat at all of these great restaurants all while theyre stuck in an office reading hundreds and hundreds of the same essays! Just think about it logically for a beat. Why would they want to admit someone theyre jealous of? Why would they want to admit someone who has all the privileges they may never have had themselves? Why would they want to admit someone who got to snorkel in Hawaii when they can only dream of snorkeling in Hawaii? Its simple deductive reasoning. Dont write things that are going to upset college admissions counselors. Dont write things that are going to make college admissions counselors press the deny button. Seriously. Dont do it! While youre here, check out this post on College Essay Topics.
