The USS Indianapolis left Guam unescorted heading for Leyte Gulf, making it the first unescorted capital boat lacking enemy of submarine location hardware during the whole war. Obscure to the USS Indianpolis is that the I-58 Japanese submarine was known to lurk the Phillipine Sea, in the immediate way of the USS Indianapolis.
